Developing Secure Attachment: Two-Part Online Workshop

This online workshop with Dr. Lisa Firestone will provide tools to help people heal insecure attachment, resolve trauma, integrate their emotions, and flourish in all their relationships.

This two-part online workshop will introduce:

  • How childhood attachment patterns affect individuals and their relationships
  • A framework for resolving childhood trauma
  • A process to develop earned secure attachment
  • Cutting-edge neurobiological research findings to help rewire the brain
  • Step-by-step guidelines for how to write a coherent narrative

Every person carries around deep wounds, behaviors, and beliefs about themselves and others from their earliest attachments that unconsciously direct their lives. Early relationships help shape a person’s adult romantic relationships, how they will parent, and how they expect others to react to them.

Attachment research shows that when people fail to make sense of their past, they find themselves reliving and recreating it, essentially re-experiencing old hurts over and over again. However, making sense of the past is the best predictor of one’s ability to shape their future.

This two-part online workshop will introduce the tools for individuals to dig deep and resolve old traumas, big and small, so that they no longer haunt them. For mental health professionals, it will provide strategies to apply these tools with your clients.

This workshop will draw upon the latest attachment research and outline the process of writing a coherent narrative. Research in neurobiology shows that when a person writes a coherent narrative, they actually rewire their brain to feel more secure within themselves and their relationships, developing earned secure attachment.

This online workshop will be supplemented with a downloadable booklet of the writing exercises mentioned in Dr. Firestone’s presentations, so that you can work through the exercises on your own time at your own pace. Additionally, the workshop will include access to a video Toolkit of exercises to help you calm down and regulate your emotions as you work through understanding your attachment history and developing earned security.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Explain how child attachment patterns continue to affect people throughout their lives.
  2. Describe, using cutting edge neurobiological research, how clients can rewire their brains to feel more secure.
  3. Discuss how a patient, through the process of psychotherapy, can develop an earned secure attachment in adulthood.
  4. Access step-by-step guidelines for how to help clients develop a coherent narrative for their life.

How to Stop Binge Eating: 6 Keys to Freedom

Binge Eating Disorder affects 6.5 million people, and many more are impacted by binge eating that is less frequent but equally distressing. In this 90-minute webinar, Dr. Gia Marson, a psychologist with an expertise in eating disorders, will draw on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to:

    • Explain scientifically validated concepts about binge eating
    • Identify eating and non-eating related triggers
    • Teach six self-help tools for recovery
    • Answer questions about the challenges

Children initially eat naturally. They enjoy foods without experiencing shame or pride as a result of their choices. At the same time, they listen to their body’s hunger and fullness cues…until they are bombarded with the myths of eating, the stigma of various body shapes and sizes, and the labels of foods as good or bad.  How does this natural, biologically-driven relationship with food turn into a battle for so many adults and, for millions of people, turn into a cycle of binge eating? Most importantly, what are the keys to freedom with food?

Binge eating is characterized by eating much more quickly than is typical, eating until uncomfortably full, feeling guilty or disgusted after the overeating, often eating alone to reduce embarrassment, feeling a loss of control, and eating much more than would be expected even when not physically hungry.  It is essential to recognize that binge eating is not only about food. For those who don’t know where to begin to rebuild a satisfying relationship with eating, learning the effective science-based strategies is a hopeful place to start.

While most people do not meet the full criteria for the disorder, anyone who experiences binge eating can benefit from what will be shared in this Webinar, the triggers that may lead to this cycle and the steps that, research shows, lead to healing.

Learning Objectives:

      1. Increase hope that recovery from binge eating is possible using the CBT model.
      2. Question the truth about diets and health: Why does dieting seem normal? Are weight and health synonymous?
      3. Identify eating and non-eating related triggers for binge eating.

The Psychological Effects of Emotional Hunger

This Webinar with Dr. Lisa Firestone will help individuals and therapists make sense of the serious psychological consequences of emotional hunger and will clarify the confusion between what might look like love from real, nurturing love. This distinction helps a person to understand and make sense of the impact of having an emotionally hungry parent on their psychological development and on their relationships, especially with partners and children.

The Webinar will draw on Dr. Robert Firestone’s theoretical understanding of emotional hunger as well as attachment theory to explore the causes and consequences of emotional hunger. It will illuminate how a person can feel for their experience, overcome the impact of emotional hunger, and learn to love themselves.

$15.00Add to cart

The Webinar will explain:

  • How to distinguish between emotional hunger and love, including examples of both
  • The serious psychological impact of emotional hunger
  • How to identify whether a person is experiencing emotional hunger or love
  • The underlying causes of emotional hunger
  • How to develop a more compassionate attitude toward yourself if you have been impacted by emotional hunger
  • Methods for breaking maladaptive patterns that result from having an emotionally hungry parent
  • Ways to develop more inner security
  • How to shift to being more loving, and less emotionally hungry

Emotional hunger can look like love and is often mistaken for love, but it has the opposite effect on the person it is directed toward. Love nurtures, while emotional hunger drains the person and leaves them empty. Understanding the difference between emotional hunger versus love can help explain why some people don’t feel nurtured or secure in parent-child or adult romantic relationships.

Many children grow up in an environment in which they are focused on by a parent, and there are no boundaries. They feel confused, because their parent appears to be “there for them,” but the parent’s focus and intrusion left them insecure and untrusting.  Many adults experience romantic relationships in which they feel nothing they do is enough, and that they continually fail to satisfy the needs of their partner. Many people have a parent or partner who they’d describe as overbearing, intrusive, smothering, overprotective, or possessive. Often, these behaviors are the result of the person expressing or experiencing emotional hunger as opposed to real love.

People often mistake emotional hunger for love, because it involves longing and intensity, and in certain ways, can look the same. A person may seem highly attentive or affectionate to their partner or child, which seems positive. However, emotional hunger differs from love in that the child or other person in the relationship does not feel nurtured as they would by love, but instead, feels drained of vital energy. A child may cling to the parent, because they’re not experiencing a real sense of security or connection. The partner may feel a constant pressure to make their significant other feel good or whole.

When a person feels emotional hunger, they often experience it as a need they’re trying to fill using another person. Their attention or affection doesn’t come as an act of nurturance but instead is an act of taking, a feeling of need.

Love is like food that nourishes and develops a child’s emerging psyche. Emotional hunger, on the contrary, depletes the child and can make it more difficult for a child to differentiate or individuate. A child who has experienced emotional hunger often feels self-focused, self-protective, and withholding from others. This Webinar will shed light on the impact of emotional hunger and methods for breaking maladaptive patterns related to emotional hunger.

Learning Objectives:
1. Recognize the difference between emotional hunger versus love
2. Explain how emotional hunger can contribute to an ambivalent attachment pattern in children or preoccupied attachment pattern in adults
3. Describe strategies for parents and couples to develop more inner security and come to express  more attuned nurturing emotional responses

Finding Healthy and Satisfying Sexuality Through Self-acceptance

How self-acceptance and understanding can lead to healthier, more fulfilling sexuality

Sexuality is an important part of one’s identity, yet people often feel turned on themselves in relation to sex. While a person’s sexuality is unique to the individual, there are many ways that people struggle with their sexuality that are highly common but rarely talked about. Whatever a person’s specific sexual desires and preferences may be, there are a lot of complicated feelings about sex that often have to do with learned attitudes and emotions around wanting. Feelings around one’s sexuality can range from dissatisfaction to discomfort, insecurity to shame and are often rooted in negative overlays from their past. This 90-minute Webinar with Dr. Lisa Firestone will emphasize how healthy sexuality isn’t about a specific strategy, technique, or how often you have sex; it’s about having a healthy attitude toward your own sexuality that extends to your sexual relationships.

The Webinar will explore the following subjects:

  • Common self-critical thoughts or “critical inner voices” people experience around sexuality, their bodies, and wanting
  • How subtle and unsubtle attitudes from family and society get internalized to influence how someone feels about themselves in relation to sex as well as what they’re attracted to in a partner
  • Ways a person can feel more accepting, comfortable, and vital in their own sexuality
  • How to move toward developing one’s own values and beliefs around sexuality

Learning Objectives:

  1. Recognize the negative thoughts a person has toward themselves, their partner, and their sexuality in order to provide targeted interventions
  2. Discuss a cognitive/affective/behavioral approach for challenging critical inner voices surrounding sexuality
  3. Identify how familial and societal influences have contributed to critical or distorted attitudes toward self and sexuality
  4. Provide greater awareness of personal values and perspectives on sexuality
  5. Express a broader understanding of the diverse expressions of human sexuality
  6. Communicate with increased skill and comfort around sexuality-related topics

Daring to Love

Watch the Webinar here.

When it comes to finding love, are you standing in your own way?

We all seem to want our romantic relationships to work, but what if our desire for love is actually not as straightforward as we think? What if there is a part of us that is unconsciously pushing it away? This free one-hour Webinar addresses the reality that when it comes to sabotaging love, we are often our own biggest problem. But this reality also carries an optimistic and empowering message—we are also our only real solution.

In this Webinar, author of Daring to Love Tamsen Firestone will join Dr. Lisa Firestone to explore how and why we often, without awareness, act against our best interests by reacting against love. It explains how our habits of emotional self-defense developed from early in our lives interfere with our ability to give and receive love. Participants will learn how to become more aware of how their defenses against love drive their actions and gain helpful advice for challenging these patterns.

The only actual power we have in a relationship is that of developing ourselves. Therefore, our greatest task when it comes to sustaining love is that of increasing our capacity for intimacy and closeness. The act of looking within, to identify the defenses that obstruct love and then learn how to challenge them, is the very thing that provides a way to establish or recapture the feelings of friendship and love that we desire in our intimate relationship.

This Webinar will explain:

  • Why we resist vulnerability and ways we can sustain it
  • How love challenges an old identity and how we can reject this identity and accept more love
  • Why being open to sadness can make us less defended against love
  • How facing our fears of loss can enrich our lives and make our relationships more meaningful

About Daring to Love

Move beyond fear of intimacy, embrace vulnerability and create lasting connection

When it comes to finding love, are you standing in your own way? Daring to Love will help you identify the internal barriers that cause you to sabotage your love life, open yourself up to vulnerability, and build the intimate, lasting relationship you truly desire.

After a breakup, most of us spend a lot of time thinking long and hard about what the other person did to cause it, rather than reflecting on ourselves. It seems self-evident that we want our romantic relationships to work, and that love and long-term commitment are our ultimate goals. But what if our desire for love is actually not as straightforward as our emotions make us believe? What if, instead of pursuing love, we are unconsciously pushing it away?

Daring to Love offers information based on Robert Firestone’s books and research about relationships plus techniques based on his groundbreaking voice therapy—the process of giving spoken word to unhealthy patterns—to help you understand how you are getting in your own way on the quest for true love. Love makes us vulnerable and triggers old defenses we formed in childhood, causing us to sabotage our relationships in myriad subtle—and not-so-subtle—ways. Using the voice therapy strategies in this book, you will be able to identify your own defensive patterns and uncover the destructive messages your critical inner voice is telling you about yourself, your partners, and your relationships.

If you’re struggling to cultivate lasting relationships, this book can help you embark on your next romantic journey with more openness and self-knowledge.

About Live Through This

Suicide is a dirty word. It happens only to the weak, cowardly, sinful, or selfish among us—or so we’ve been told. The truth is that suicide is none of those things. The truth is that suicide is borne of pain, isolation, and hopelessness. It’s the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S. Over 1 million Americans attempt suicide annually, 122.9 of us die by suicide per day, and over 44,965 of us die by suicide every year.

Live Through This is a series of portraits and true stories of suicide attempt survivors nationwide whose identities span a large breadth of background, ethnicity, faith, gender presentation, sexual orientation, profession, age, and experience. Suicide does not discriminate. Any one of these survivors could be your mom, a coworker, your partner, your best friend. Live Through This asks you to look into the eyes of survivors and find yourself in them. It asks you to walk a mile in their shoes before casting judgment: what would it take to make you want to take your own life?

The ways we talk and think about suicide are dangerous and discriminatory. Suicide attempt survivors, in particular, have been erased by prejudice and discrimination in both society and the very behavioral health field that exists to help them. This marginalization is egregious: 90% of suicide attempt survivors go on to live lives that do not end in suicide, but they still require compassion and care from their personal and professional support systems. By participating in Live Through This, attempt survivors take a stand: suicide is not shameful, and there is life on the other side. Our stories can save lives. You are not alone.

How To Be More Loving

Learn common barriers that get in the way of lasting love and effective strategies to achieve closeness.

Most people believe they want love in their life, but most also face challenges that lead them to stop engaging in loving actions. The feelings between couples diminish when they stop treating each other as separate people, with the respect, attraction, passion and affection that make up what we call romantic love. Often, by the time couples realize there’s a problem or seek help in therapy, they’ve become entangled in destructive patterns that have disconnected them from their loving feelings and damaged the relationship.

In order to keep their warm, attracted feelings alive, people must remember to treat love as a verb. It is a way of being more so than a state of being. Research shows that engaging in kind, loving actions actually makes us feel more in love. In this 90-minute Webinar, Dr. Lisa Firestone will explore what it really means to be in love. Drawing on the latest research and her clinical experience, she will explain how people can be more loving in their actions and maintain their loving feelings over time.

Dr. Firestone will draw on Dr. Robert Firestone’s concepts’ “fear of intimacy” and the “fantasy bond” as well as findings from attachment theory and Emotion-Focused Therapy to describe common patterns that create distance and proven strategies to achieve more closeness. Individuals, couples, and therapists working with clients will benefit by learning about how negative dynamics operate, how they can be avoided, and how they can be replaced with more vulnerable, open, loving actions and communication that allow a person to have more love in their life.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Explain how a person’s core defenses can sabotage romantic closeness
  2. Summarize effective methods for helping people to express core wants and needs
  3. Describe how the Fantasy Bond can diminish real loving feelings and behaviors.

Healing from Trauma

In this 90-minute Webinar, Dr. Lisa Firestone will focus in on tools, techniques, and treatments for recovering from trauma. Her presentation will include:

  • Introduction to psychological first aid, which can be used in or following a crisis
  • Description of the use of creating a coherent narrative as a method to resolve trauma
  • Toolkit of techniques for calming down overwhelming emotional reactions
  • Emphasis on the practice of self-compassion
  • Approach to enhancing emotional resilience to reframe thinking around a traumatic experience

Whether someone is a first-responder in an emergency, a victim of violence, or a survivor of an emotionally stormy childhood, many individuals have been impacted by trauma. When a traumatic incident occurs, the first thing we need to do is to address a person’s primary survival needs and make them feel safe. The next step is to help the person process and resolve the trauma to lessen its impact on their life going forward.

A trauma may be what we call a big “T” Trauma like physical or sexual abuse, serious loss, or a life-threatening experience or a little “t” trauma, an event that wasn’t life-threatening but caused us personal, emotional distress and shifted how we saw ourselves and the world. Our response to any trauma, big or small, may be to want to shut it out or forget about it. However, research has shown that unresolved trauma can haunt us when we don’t feel the full pain of our experience and make sense of it.

Trauma affects people differently, with studies showing that people who’ve experienced early childhood trauma are more likely to suffer worse effects from a trauma later in life. What this tells us is that a person’s history matters when it comes to understanding their reaction to a potentially traumatic event and to designing a treatment approach for them. Unresolved trauma from one’s past can go on to affect them throughout their life. So, how can someone face, heal, and even grow from their trauma? How can trauma survivors go on to live happy, fulfilling lives?

Learning Objectives:

  1. Discuss a framework for helping clients resolve childhood traumas.
  2. Describe guidelines for how to help clients develop a coherent narrative for their life
  3. Identify the three key components of self-compassion
