Understanding and Effectively Treating Violence

This Webinar will summarize a theory of the causes and prevention of violent behavior, meaning the infliction of injury, especially lethal or life-threatening injury, on a person by a person. The topics discussed will include the evaluation and treatment of individuals who are actually or potentially violent. It will be organized around the concept that violence is caused or prevented by the interaction between biological, psychological and social forces, especially those that increase or decrease exposure and vulnerability to shame and humiliation.

Learning Objectives:
1) To be able to expain the concept of the bio-psycho-social etiology of violent behavior, i.e., the awareness that violence is multi-determined and not reducible to any one cause.

2) To be able to recognize, that beneath all the variety in the determinants responsible for violent behavior, there is a common thread – the degree of exposure to shame and humiliation, and individuals’ relative capacity to tolerate shame and restore self-esteem without resorting to destructive or self-destructive behavior.

3) To able to describe the psychology and sociology of feelings of shame (versus pride) and guilt (versus innocence), the principal emotional forces that affect the likelihood and direction of violence.

Love in the Time of Twitter

It’s not your imagination, 21st Century love relationships are more difficult to maintain. While 90 percent of young people still say that marriage is in their long-term plans, if trends continue, only half will be able to even come close to that goal. Relationships in general and marriage in particular, is more difficult to maintain because (1) expectations are higher; (2) commitment is lower; (3) challenges are more plentiful. One fact alone explains a lot, i.e. other than breathing we spend more time streaming technology than any other activity. That’s right, we spend about 9 ½ hours a day listening to music, emailing, texting, instant messaging, Facebooking, Twittering, surfing—you name it. This constant state of stimulation leaves little room for contemplation, mindfulness, and deep intimacy, which are all necessary for maintaining relationships. Fortunately, neuroscience is quickly providing answers and strategies for helping. So today, as more individuals and couples seek help for their relationship issues, we, the clinicians, can offer better help and insight. So while the changing zeitgeist has provided unique challenges, neuroscience and sociological research is quickly providing answers. Topics to be addressed will include but not be limited to: clinical applications from neuroscience, psychogenic versus autogenic sexual arousal, sexual desire discrepancy, emotional and physical infidelity, sexual compulsivity, gender differences, gay and lesbian research update, intensive therapy model, mindfulness in relationships, the stages of love, neuroscientific approach to systems theory, neurogenesis and therapeutic change. The goal is to make this time both personally and professionally rewarding!

Participants will:

  • Summarize a rational for mindfulness in relationships
  • Describe the role of dopamine in compulsivity
  • List four vehicles of the social media
  • List a working definition of infidelity

The Fantasy Bond

What is real intimacy? How do we define a close relationship? When working with couples what are we trying to help achieve? How do we distinguish between a truly close relationship and an illusion of connection or “fantasy bond?” This Webinar presents a model for an ideal relationship that combines emotional closeness and sexual intimacy, while each partner maintains a differentiated and individuated sense of self. Dr. Firestone will discuss characteristics of a relationship in which a fantasy bond has developed verses an ideal relationship. She will introduce Voice Therapy, an innovative, therapeutic approach, as a model for helping clients break fantasy bonds and enhance each partner’s sense of a differentiated “real self.” She will explore two dimensions of ideal relationships: the degree of emotional closeness and the degree of individuation between partners. She will present Separation Theory, a model that integrates psychodynamic, existential, and family systems frameworks to help couples understand the barriers to achieving and sustaining intimacy.

Learning Objectives:
1) Explore the unconscious factors involved in partner selection and describe the relationship between “falling in love” and couple burnout.
2) Assess the emotional health of partners and learn to identify the negative thoughts they have toward self, partner, and the relationship in order to provide targeted interventions.

Understanding and Effectively Treating Violence – Oct. 15
