The most common psychiatric emergency we face as clinicians is suicide. Seventy-one percent of psychotherapists report at least one client attempting, while 28 percent report having at least one client die by suicide. Suicide rates keep rising for working age Americans and suicide is now the second leading cause of death for college age youth. In order to prevent suicide we must understand the internal struggle suicidal individuals experience. This workshop will provide an in-depth understanding of the dynamics of suicide, assessment strategies, and empirically validated treatments. This Webinar will: (1) provide the latest findings on warning signs and risk factors for suicide, (2) offer a conceptual model and a developmental perspective on the dynamics underlying suicide, (3) explore the internal struggle, the ambivalence of suicide, through expert interviews and insight provided by 3 survivors of very lethal suicide attempts, (4) address both objective assessment and the formation of clinical judgment, (5) inform participants about recent research on empirically validated treatment approaches, and (6) provide participants with state of the art crisis management strategies.

Learning Objectives:

1. Implement state of the art crisis intervention for suicidal patients

2. Identify a number of empirically validated treatments for suicide, that target suicide directly

3. Recognize warning signs of immediate risk versus long term risk factors
