Voice Therapy: Helping Clients Overcome their Inner Critic

An Online Workshop introducing an innovative therapeutic approach to overcoming the inner critic that sabotages a person’s life.

  • An introduction to Voice Therapy, a five-step technique that can help clients challenge and overcome the “critical inner voice” that holds them back in life
  • Insight into the developmental factors that lead a person to develop this destructive inner enemy
  • Techniques to help clients identify destructive thoughts or voices that cause suffering and self-limiting behavior
  • Strategies to help clients connect with their real self, wants, needs, and goals and identify achievable steps for positive and meaningful change in their lives
  • Tools to help clients understand and tolerate the anxiety that comes with changing core defenses and harmful beliefs about themselves

We often use the expression, “listen to your inner voice” as a positive affirmation. However, every person is divided when it comes to how they see themselves. While one side can be life-affirming and supportive when it comes to their true wants, desires and goals, the other side is critical, coaxing, and self-destructive.

Psychologist and author Dr. Robert Firestone  refers to this internal enemy as an “anti-self. The “critical inner voice” is the language of the anti-self.  This “voice” can sabotage, diminish, or undermine people in their pursuit of what matters to them. Therefore, learning to deal effectively with their inner critic is central to all areas of life: personal development, healthy relationships, self-esteem, and career success.

This CE Webinar with Dr. Lisa Firestone will provide participants with an overview of Voice Therapy and how they can incorporate it into their practice. Dr. Firestone will explain Separation Theory, a theoretical approach that helps clients understand the developmental roots of their inner critic.

In addition to gaining insight into where their inner critic comes from, participants will discover ways to help their clients identify destructive thoughts or “voices” that cause debilitating feelings of guilt and shame and interfere with all areas of life. They will learn how Voice Therapy techniques can be used to challenge and overcome these destructive inner thoughts and to more effectively cope with anxiety, depression, personal relationships, career, and personal aspirations.

Finally, Dr. Firestone will introduce new strategies to help clients reassess their goals, understand and tolerate the anxiety of challenging a negative, core identity, and embrace achievable steps for positive and meaningful change in their lives.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Apply techniques to identify and challenge destructive thinking in clients.
  2. Identify and help clients address core beliefs that limit behavior change.
  3. Describe strategies to help clients tolerate anxiety associated in breaking destructive patterns.

Overcoming Relationship Anxiety

An insightful and compassionate approach to understanding and coping with the anxiety that can be triggered by our close relationships

  • Understand how relationships can trigger feelings of anxiety: insecurity, fear, rejection,  abandonment, or of being overwhelmed diminished consumed
  • Explore the root causes of relationship anxiety
  • Explain the concept of attachment theory and how it affects anxiety about relationships
  • Understand how our “critical inner voice” perpetuates anxiety and insecurity
  • Discuss valuable tools to help people cope with anxiety in their relationships

While the idea of falling in love can sound blissful, relationships almost always challenge us in ways we don’t expect. Anxiety can arise at various points in a relationship from the moment we first start dating to when we decide to make a symbolic commitment, like moving in together or getting married. In large part, this anxiety has to do with our past. Circumstances and dynamics in our closest relationships often trigger old feelings such as insecurity, fear, rejection, or abandonment, or in contrast fears of being overwhelmed depended on  of or diminished. They challenge long-held, negative ideas we have about ourselves and threaten defenses that made us feel safe early in our lives but actually hurt or limit our current relationships.

In this Webinar, Dr. Lisa Firestone will shed light on why we experience relationship anxiety. Where do our fears come from? She will introduce the concept of attachment theory and explain how our early attachment patterns can shape our feelings and actions in our adult relationships. She will further explain the influence of the “critical inner voice,” a negative thought process we internalize based on hurtful attitudes and experiences. This critical inner voice goes on to perpetuate our anxiety by filling our heads with critical, shaming thoughts about ourselves and our partner or potential partners.

Dr. Firestone will introduce methods that can help individuals overcome their relationship anxiety by making connections to their past, creating a coherent narrative, and identifying and challenging this destructive inner voice. She will explain how practicing mindfulness and self-compassion are valuable tools to help people cope with the anxiety that comes with change. The Webinar will reveal how, when armed with these introspective tools, individuals can create more secure attachments and enjoy closer, more fulfilling, and more loving relationships.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify clients’ negative thought patterns/ attitudes that influence relationship anxiety
  2. Discuss a cognitive/affective/behavioral approach for challenging critical inner voices
  3. Describe strategies to help clients tolerate anxiety associated in making changes
  4. Help clients identify their early attachment style.
  5. Recognize how early adaptation patterns shape a client’s attachment style and adult relationships.

  • Learn about the psychological roots of loneliness
  • Overcome the critical inner voice that perpetuates feelings of isolation
  • Challenge the psychological defenses that limit one’s ability to make connections

While loneliness can make us feel outcast or disconnected from others, we are certainly not alone in what we’re going through. Last year, a national survey of more than 20,000 Americans showed that most U.S. adults are considered lonely. On a deep level, most people struggle with a fundamental feeling that they’re an outsider, and this often leads them down a path in which they feel more isolated. In this 90-minute Webinar, Dr. Lisa Firestone will examine the true roots of loneliness. She will explore how a person’s defenses and their critical inner voice perpetuate feelings of alienation. Why do people turn against themselves? How can they overcome the self-critical thoughts and self-sabotaging behaviors that perpetuate the cycle of solitude?

Participants will learn valuable tools to identify and overcome core defenses that contribute to loneliness and will be introduced to therapy techniques that will help them to shatter the negative filter through which they see themselves and the world around them. Dr. Firestone will teach techniques to overcome the “critical inner voice” that convinces people they are different in some basic negative sense. By emphasizing self-compassion and a common humanity, people can start to challenge core beliefs about themselves. They can break out of shells they never knew they’d built to live freer, more fulfilling lives and build more satisfying and meaningful connections.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Apply techniques to identify and challenge destructive thinking in clients
  2. Discuss a cognitive/affective/behavioral approach for challenging the Critical Inner Voices in loneliness and depression
  3. Identify clients’ negative thought patterns/ attitudes that influence loneliness and depression
  4. Distinguish between self-compassion and self-esteem

Overcoming Depression: Two-Part Online Workshop

This Webinar will introduce:

  • A cognitive/ affective/ behavioral approach to conquering the critical inner voice that drives depression
  • Assessment instruments, homework exercises, and other tools that can help people separate from negative thoughts
  • Specific actions and exercises people can engage in to reduce symptoms of depression
  • Tools to enhance mindfulness, self-compassion, and a positive sense of self

Depression the most common mental health disorder in the United States, affecting nearly one in 10 adults. According to the World Health Organization, by the year 2020, depression will be the second most common health problem in the world. With depression on the rise, it is perhaps more important than ever to seek treatment methods to help individuals battling depression.

Effective therapies to treat depression involve dealing with distorted cognitions and beliefs as well as the feelings behind those thoughts. In this Webinar, Dr. Lisa Firestone will introduce an empowering approach to treating depression, while highlighting specific actions individuals can take that have been shown to reduce symptoms of depression. She will discuss a method in which therapists can help clients identify a destructive line of thinking known as the “critical inner voice” that can perpetuate a cycle of depression.

When someone is in a depressed state, the hopelessness they feel seems to cloud the lens through which they see themselves and the world around them. They may get lost in painful patterns of rumination that make it especially difficult to take actions that may help reduce depressive symptoms. By understanding the source of the thoughts and taking their own side, people can begin to challenge the roots of depression.

Dr. Firestone will explain a cognitive/affective/behavioral modality for bringing “critical inner voices” to the surface. Her presentation will draw on concepts from cognitive therapy and Emotion-focused Therapy as well as Voice Therapy, which integrates these concepts. She will introduce assessment instruments, homework exercises, and other tools that can help clients separate from negative thoughts and take actions to go against them. In addition, she will discuss how reducing rumination, while enhancing mindfulness and self-compassion can help fight depression. Participants will learn how to effectively challenge critical inner voices, develop more self-compassion, and strengthen their positive sense of self.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Apply techniques to identify and challenge destructive thinking in clients
  2. Describe strategies to help clients tolerate anxiety associated in breaking destructive patterns
  3. Distinguish between self-compassion and self-esteem
  4. Discuss a cognitive/affective/behavioral approach for challenging the Critical Inner Voices in depression
  5. Identify clients’ negative thought patterns/ attitudes that influence depression

Building a Healthy Sense of Self

Cultivating a healthy, compassionate, and authentic sense of self is key to improving every aspect of our lives. In this Webinar, Dr. Lisa Firestone will help individuals and therapists learn to:

  • Challenge a destructive inner enemy that undermines, evaluates, comments, and coaches people on every aspect of their lives
  • Identify an inherited negative sense of identity that keeps people from recognizing their real self
  • Embrace self-compassion, as a powerful tool with benefits that differ from self-esteem and counter narcissism
  • Break free of self-limiting behaviors that prevent people from achieving their personal goals

A person’s sense of self is often divided. Most people have a side of themselves that is “on their own team.” It encourages and supports them. It helps them fight for what they want and believes in what they can achieve. However, there is also an opposite force inside each person that acts as their own worst enemy.  It insults, critiques, questions, and undermines. It keeps them from pursuing their goals and punishes them for their mistakes. This side of a person has been referred to as the “anti-self.” Learning to deal effectively with this internal enemy and the negative self-talk it generates is key to not only building a healthy sense of self, but becoming who we want to be and living the life we desire.

In this 90-minute Webinar, Dr. Lisa Firestone will outline a powerful approach to overcoming one’s “critical inner voice” and building a healthy, authentic, and compassionate sense of self.  She will draw on concepts from Separation Theory and psychological differentiation in order to illustrate how a person’s past comes to shape their sense of identity and the language of their inner critic. She will introduce Voice Therapy as a cognitive/ behavioral / therapeutic approach to conquering this destructive internal enemy. She will bring in the latest research in self-compassion as a crucial tool for enhancing a person’s self-worth, while avoiding the conditional aspects of self-esteem and the destructive effects of narcissism. Finally, she will describe how differentiating from negative overlays from one’s past can help a person challenge their anti-self in order to live free of imagined limitations and create their own sense of who they really are as well as who they seek to be.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Apply techniques to identify and challenge destructive thinking and negative self-talk in clients
  2. Describe methods for helping people develop more self-reflection
  3. Explain the four steps in differentiation of self
  4. List the three elements of self-compassion
  5. Describe how self-compassion differs from self-esteem and counters narcissism

What You Can Do to Save a Life from Suicide

There’s nothing more concerning than the worry that someone you care about may be suicidal. And yet, suicide is a much more common crisis than many of us imagine. Worldwide, a person dies by suicide every 40 seconds. In the United States, the latest data shows the suicide rate to be at a 30-year-high, having increased by 24 percent in 15 years. In a given lifetime, all of us will encounter someone in the grip of a suicidal crisis. From the person showing visible distress in a public space to, a friend who is struggling to cope with a break-up, to a close family member facing financial hardship, they need us to be there and show we care. That is why it’s so important to know what you can do to help.

In this free Webinar, suicidologist Dr. Lisa Firestone will outline steps we can all take to reach out and help someone who may be suicidal. She will talk about the warning signs of suicide as well as the helper tasks that can save a life. In addition, Dr. Firestone will shed light on what goes on in the mind of someone who is experiencing self-destructive thoughts and will explain steps people can take to stand up to this “critical inner voice” that drives the suicidal state. While it can feel scary to talk about suicide, we must not hesitate to be the one to reach out when someone is in crisis. The suicidal state is almost always transient and temporary. If we can connect with someone when they are in crisis, we can truly help save lives.

Effective Ways to Fight Depression

Presenter: Lisa Firestone, Ph.D.

FREE WEBINAR

60 Minutes

One in 10 people in the United States experiences depression with more people struggling every day. New studies show that depression is on the rise and affecting people at a younger age. Depression is a serious disorder and should be taken as seriously as any medical condition. Yet, it’s estimated that 80 percent of people with symptoms of depression are not getting treatment. People struggling with depression should know that there are many effective ways to fight depression. It’s incredibly important to empower ourselves with information on the different techniques that can help individuals battle depression.

In this one-hour online presentation, Dr. Lisa Firestone will share up-to-date information on various methods that have been proven to help alleviate symptoms of depression. She will introduce a concept known as the “critical inner voice,” an internal enemy we all possess that fuels symptoms of depression and often discourages those suffering from engaging in the very behaviors that could help them feel better. Overcoming Breakups and Rejection

By truly understanding the emotions triggered by a breakup or rejection, people can free themselves of much of their suffering and move on even stronger.

For someone experiencing a breakup or rejection, the advice to “just get over it” can feel impossible. Although losing a relationship is hard for anyone, there are deeper, more complex reasons certain people become stuck in their pain and suffer more than others. A rejection can trigger a painful reminder of past hurts and a violent assault on one’s sense of self, neither of which have much to do with the partner a person has lost. In addition, breaking up with someone breaks a fantasy of connection that couples form in order to feel safe and secure. A fracture to this security can trigger hostile self-attacks and spark anxiety based on our personal attachment history.

By exploring each of these concepts and forming a more coherent understanding one’s emotions around a breakup, a person can actually use the experience of a breakup or rejection as an opportunity for personal growth. Through self-exploration paired with self-compassion, a person can feel stronger in themselves and go on to enjoy healthier, more satisfying relationships. In this 90-minute Webinar, Dr. Lisa Firestone will introduce individuals and therapists to psychological tools that can help a person on their path to heal from a breakup or rejection:

These include:

  • Exploring how the past has shaped one’s relationship patterns, choices, and reactions
  • Recognizing critical self-attacks that are triggered by a separation

Timeless: Understanding the Healthy Aging Brain

This eye-opening presentation with Dr. Lou Cozolino will focus on the healthy aging brain from the perspectives of social neuroscience and interpersonal neurobiology. The brain will be described as a social organ whose health and longevity is embedded in a matrix of social connectedness. The brain’s evolution and development as well as its changing skills and abilities throughout the lifespan will be interpreted as a succession of adaptations to changing social roles. From these perspectives, we will take a new look at the aging research from epidemiology and the social sciences and present some suggestions to promote healthy aging.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Recognize some of the important ways the brain changes through the lifespan.
  2. Utilize principles of social neuroscience to guide positive treatment with older clients.
  3. Identify the significance of the correlates of healthy aging in an evolutionary context.
